16/4/10 – Acquisitions – Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum – One of the most interesting paintings at the Sotheby’s auction in London on 9 December 2009, was that of a young girl carrying a basket of plums and wearing an impressive headpiece, painted by Cesar van Everdingen (ill.). This canvas, unpublished until now and from a private collection in Vienna, Austria, was estimated at a low 50,000 to 70,000 pounds. It sold for 1,161,250.00 pounds to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, an amount which is well worth it given both its quality and excellent state of conservation ; the painting was in its natural condition and all indications are that once the yellow varnish is cleaned, the subtle colours will be revealed.

The basket and headpiece are from Brazil and reflect the interest of Dutch painters at this time (Frans Post but also Albert Eeckhout) for this country where the Netherlands had established colonies on a small section of the coastline (New Holland) between 1624 and 1654. This might well be an allegorical figure, which the artist often painted. The Rijksmuseum already owned a Cesar van Everdingen work, a Young Woman Warming her Hands over a Fire, perhaps an allegory of winter. This canvas as well as the one just acquired at auction were both listed in the inventory taken after the artist’s death.

We also would like to point out an acquisition made in 2009 by the Rijksmuseum of four watercolours by the 18th century Dutch landscape artist, Jacob Cats (ill. 2 to 5) representing views of Tafelberg, a hill close to Blaricum.
