Appointment and Donation...News from the States

27/3/13 - Appointment and donation - San Francisco, Fine Arts Museums and Dallas, Museum of Art - Colin Bailey has just been appointed, starting 1st June, as head of the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco, that is two establishments, the Legion of Honor and the De Young Museum. This institution had been left without a director since the death, over a year ago, of John Buchanan.
An Oxford graduate, Colin Bailey had been at various American museums before becoming the director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, then deputy director of the Frick Collection, his current post. He is particularly well known in France as he is one of the leading English speaking specialists of 18th and 19th century French art.

Other information on current happenings in the United States concerns the Dallas Museum of Art, recently highlighted here in a long article, in French, and a news item (we will soon present other acquisitions there), which has received a 17 million dollar donation for the creation of an endowment fund to be used exclusively for developing the European art collection, notably Renaissance and Baroque works. Though the holdings, as we saw, are very rich in European works from the 19th and early 20th centuries, old master paintings, notably those prior to the 18th century are less well represented. Of the 17 million, 13.6 will be devoted solely to acquisitions, while 3.4 will go to acquisitions and exhibitions of works before 1700. The generous donor is Marguerite Hoffman, a member of the Board of Trustees of the museum and former president of this body.
