Axel Hémery appointed director of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse

local/cache-vignettes/L216xH290/Photo_Hemery-bc558.jpg10/3/09 – Appointment – Toulouse, Musée des Augustins – Axel Hémery, curator at the Musée des Augustins since 1998, took over as interim director of the establishment a year ago after Alain Daguerre de Hureaux decided to leave in order to become an administrative judge.
He has just been officially appointed director of the museum starting on March 1st, 2009.

Following art history studies at Paris IV Sorbonne, Axel Hémery successfully passed the competitive exam for curator in 1990. After graduating from the Institut National du Patrimoine in 1993, he became a curator at the Musée Pierre-André Benoît in Arles until 1998, when he then joined the museum in Toulouse.
A specialist in old master paintings, he was the curator for many exhibitions particularly Nicolas Tournier in 2001 in Toulouse and Pas la couleur. Rien que la nuance in 2008 which we had reviewed here. He also authored the catalogue of Italian paintings at the Musée des Augustins which appeared in 2003 (see article, in French, of 18/6/03).

The new curator will no doubt undertake, at least we hope so, the extension project for the Musée des Augustins which has been in the planning and delayed more than once for many years. Let us hope, however, that this refurbishment, indispensable for one of France’s most important museums, will be carried out with all due respect for the original architecture of the building.
