Death of Anne Harnoncourt

2/6/08 - Obituary - Anne d’Harnoncourt, director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, passed away suddenly yesterday, 1st June, at the age of 64. She had been curator for the 20th century collection from 1972 until 1982 before taking over as head of the museum.

An art historian, she was a specialist on Marcel Duchamp on whom she had organized a major retrospective in 1973-1974. The Philadelphia Museum of Art had grown under her leadership, notably thanks to the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building not far from the main institution. Inaugurated in 2007, this annex houses the library and archives, the drawing, photography, design and textile collections as well as exhibition rooms and a hall devoted to contemporary art.
