Etudes photographiques website once again avalaible online

20/9/08 — Internet — Online journal — Etudes photographiques, the French online journal directed by André Gunthert had decided to stop its internet publication two years ago since it thought it was impossible to illustrate its articles due to the French copyright law.

The law has not changed, but a close look at the situation, also reflected in the thinking of various institutions, has concluded in the obvious fact that the reproduction of works belonging to the public domain (that is, produced by an artist who died more than 70 years ago) cannot be covered by copyright.

For this reason, Etudes photographiques has decided to reopen its internet website. All of the issues can thus be studied in full, including the most recent ones. From now on, internet publication will occur at the same time as the paper version. Only illustrations of works not belonging to the public domain (this concerns about half of the articles) will not be put online.

Readers can find more information by consulting André Gunthert’s text (in French) published in an editorial carried in the latest issue (n°22) detailing the conditions in which this return was made possible.
