Guillaume Ambroise, Future Director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper

14/5/12 - Appointment - Quimper, Musée des Beaux-Arts - With the current director, André Cariou, now leaving for retirement, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper has appointed Guillaume Ambroise to head the institution as of September 1st.

Guillaume Ambroise, formerly director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, arrived in Bordeaux in 2009. At the time, we had written about the challenges awaiting him as the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux was notoriously small for its size, disposing of only half its galleries and with the two buildings on either side of city hall already too cramped for exhibiting the permanent collections in optimal conditions.
In late 2012, the museum, currently undergoing a refurbishment, will at least recover the remaining gallery, increasing exhibition space. While it is still not enough, it will enable the museum to display more works from its holdings. We hope that Guillaume Ambroise’s successor will finally convince city officials for the need to create the long-awaited Musée des Beaux-Arts befitting a city such as Bordeaux.

Quimper will welcome Guillaume Ambroise with an establishment known for its rich collections. Though those devoted to the 19th century and early 20th (notably the Pont-Aven school) have been significantly enhanced these last few years, notably through exhibitions, its old master holdings have not been overlooked as an extensive restoration campaign has already started on Italian paintings, with an exhibition soon to follow.
