Hispanic Art History Journals on Internet (1)

11/2/12 - Internet - Art history journals - We recently mentioned several art history journals available only on internet. This series of news items will feature Spanish publications or those of Spanish-speaking countries, appearing in paper but also visible on the web. There are many more than in France and they are published in full, including all the illustrations.

We have decided to present them in alphabetical order, except for the first one which concerns Spain’s largest museum and which we wish to mention with no further delay.

- Anales de Historia del Arte : this is the annual journal for the departments of Medieval, Modern and Contemporary art history of the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. All of the issues since it first appeared in 1989 are online.

- Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas : this Mexican journal is published by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas. Appearing semi-annually, it was founded in 1937 and the 98 issues appear online. This is a veritable mine of information concerning Mexican art. To quote only one example, an article (in n°59 of 1988) sur the Sevilian painter Sebastián de Arteaga (1610-1652), a student of Zurbarán who spent most of his career in Mexico where he died.

- Anuario del Departamento de Historia y Teoría del Arte : this is the journal of the department of art history and theory of art of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. It is published annually and the first issue appeared in 1989. Using the previous link, readers can download whole issues but also see the index for each issue and download articles separately through the Dialnet webpage highlighting it.

- Archivo Español de Arte : the first issue of this quarterly appeared in 1925 but only those published since 2001 are currently available online, already a valuable source. It is devoted to Spanish art or foreign art related to Spain.

- Ars Longa : appearing annually, this is a publication of the department of art history of the Universidad de Valencia. All of the issues since the first in 1990 are online, except for the most recent one.

- Bienes Culturales : this journal is published annually since 2002 by the Instituto del Patrimonio Histórico Español which is the equivalent in Spain of the Direction des Patrimoines in France. It can be compared to Monumental in France. To consult an issue easily after opening the page, we advise downloading it by clicking on the second small icon at the top, right.

- Boletín del Museo del Prado : the Prado posts the articles from its annual bulletin which appeared between 1980 and 2008 (2009 and 2010 will soon be added) in full, and these can be downloaded in PDF format. The text is always in Spanish but some are also published in the language which they were written as for instance the one in 2007 featuring David’s Spanish students in French collections, by Jean-Louis Augé, the curator of the Musée Goya in Castres. To find all of the articles of a specific issue, users need only choose the year they want under the heading Año.
