25/06/10 – Acquisition – Clermont-Ferrand, Musée Roger-Quilliot – At the Sotheby’s auction in Paris on 21 June (see news item of 22/6/10), the Musée Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand preempted an album of 72 drawings by Etienne-Jean Délécluze representing views of Auvergne produced in 1821 which had remained in the artist’s family (for 18.000 € without charges).
Although Delécluze is better known to art historians for his reference work on David’s workshop, he was a student there, (Louis David, son école et son temps) and as an art critic, especially his reviews of the Salons, he was also a painter. In 1821 he spent five months traveling through Auvergne, a trip later recounted in his memoirs, Souvenirs de soixante années, saying he had done 120 drawings there. The album acquired by the Musée in Clermont-Ferrand contains panoramas of the puys (ill. 1 to 4), representations of geological formations (ill. 6) and views of cities and villages (ill. 5 and 6). Delécluze was obviously fascinated by the landscapes he saw, generally devoid of human figures, and which he imbued with the same poetic aura often found in certain contemporary German or Danish landscape artists.
