Ribera and Hubert Robert : Two Successful Fundraisers

13/1/14 - Acquisitions - Valence and Rennes, Musées des Beaux-Arts - Two French museums recently succeeded in reaching their fundraising goals to acquire important works for their collections.

1. Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652)
Saint Judas Thaddeus, c. 1609-1610
Oil on canvas - 111.2 x 88.6 cm
Rennes, Musée des Beaux-Arts

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes which wanted to purchase an early work by Ribera (ill. 1) thus raised the needed 300,000€ for this acquisition at the Tarantino Gallery in Paris. The fundraiser brought in 50,000, completed by the recently created endowment fund while the city contributed 150,000 and the State the remaining 100,000. We refer our readers to the news item announcing the launching of this fundraiser which explained the importance of this beautiful painting for the museum collections.

2. Hubert Robert (1733-1808)
Mediterranean Wharf, 1771
Oil on canvas - 183 x 225 cm
Valence, Musée des Beaux-Arts

The other museum which also succeeded in acquiring a sought-after canvas, thanks in part to a fundraiser, is the one in Valence, Drôme. Another Hubert Robert (ill. 2), purchased from the Michel Descors Gallery in Lyon, thus joined the collections for a total of 400,000€ [1].

We will return shortly with an article on the reopening of this museum but we should already point out here - something we did not do in the article relating the opening of the fundraiser - that the beautiful collection of Hubert Robert paintings residing in this establishment was almost entirely put together in less than thirty years. This rare Marine now joins the ensemble.
