Several drawing exhibitions in Paris

14/4/11 – Art market – Paris – Thanks to the Salon du Dessin, the number of events taking place elsewhere in the city at the same time continues to grow every year, extending the list of must-sees for visitors.
2011 was no different with even more exhibitions, from the Cercle Rive-Gauche to the Quartier Drouot, without forgetting individual shows of varying quality. Various dealers published catalogues allowing us to keep a permanent trace of these passing exhibitions, some of which continued for a second week.

We begin with the first show organized by Damien Boquet and Emmanuel Marty de Cambiare in a space which opens out on the very chic Place Vendôme. There were a number of very impressive sheets, including a pen and brown ink drawing by Martin Fréminet (ill. 1), recently exhibited in Fontainebleau (see article), preparatory for a figure of a king of Juda and Israel on the ceiling of the chapel of the Trinity in Fontainebleau, a study by Simon Vouet of Saint-François-de-Paule in the painting held at a church in Quebec Saint-François-de-Paule Resuscitating a Child, a large Resurrection by Antoine-François Callet and a beautiful pastel study of the sky by Eugène Delacroix. Modern sheets by Henri Laurens, André Lhote and Max Ernst complete this ensemble illustrated in a luxurious and well documented catalogue by Laurie Marty de Cambiare.

Not far away, Nicolas Schwed also presented a beautiful selection of drawings presented in a catalogue (in English) of which we would particularly point out a Ciro Ferri, Egeria Showing the Shield to Numa Pompilius, recalling the artist’s drawings currently featured at Louvere (see news item of 27/3/11), an Ubaldo Gandolfi representing Six Nudes in a Landscape as well as an allegory by a strange artist, Giovanni David (ill. 2) ; we remind our readers that Montpellier recently acquired a painting by him (see news item of 13/12/10).

3. Hubert Robert (1733-1808)

Rîve Gauche, the Artesepia gallery also presented some interesting sheets, including a Hubert Robert (ill. 3), but, alas, without a catalogue.
However, the Ladrière gallery exhibited drawings by an Italian antique dealer (Pagliari Fine Arts), next to its own offerings, all published in a beautiful catalogue (in Italian and French) by Franco Moro. It includes notably two oils on paper : a fascinating Vanitas by Guercino showing two skulls laughing while talking together and a Virgin of the Immaculate Conception (ill. 4) of the Polish artist active in Rome in the 18th century, Taddeo (or Taddeus) Kuntz.

We conclude with the offerings in the Quartier Drouot, at the Alexis Bordes gallery which featured for a few more days several beautiful sheets including a pastel by François Le Moyne (ill. 5), a rare drawing of the late 15th century Florentine school representing the Virgin and a large The Arrest of Christ attributed to Van Dyck, in black chalk and brown ink with oil highlights, an attribution which in all probability will be confirmed. Here again, a catalogue provides us with an enduring reference to the exhibition.
