15/4/09 – Acquisitions – Strasbourg, Musée des Beaux-Arts – The museum in Strasbourg has just received a very interesting bequest of 11 old master paintings. These works graced the Parisian apartment of Ann L. Oppenheimer, born in Strasbourg in 1912 and deceased on 23 January 2008. The donator’s family was originally from Frankfurt but had settled in Alsace. Julius Oppenheimer, her father, directed an important leather business (“Adler& Oppenheimer, A.G.”) along with his brother and cousin. The company’s headquarters were transferred to Berlin after World War I. It was expropriated under Nazi racial laws in 1938.

Unfortunately, we have only one photograph. Attributions must be carefully examined as almost all of the works are still unpublished. We will provide illustrations as soon as they become available. The catalogue of Northern paintings for Strasbourg is barely out (article coming sooon) that it is already incomplete as several canvases come from the Flemish school and one from the Dutch. Among the Flemish, there is a masterpiece by the Master of the Parrot (active in Antwerp in the first half of the 16th century) representing a Virgin with Child, moreover in excellent condition. A Portrait of a Humanist, attributed to Quentin Metsys, is probably not by this artist even if the quality is remarkable. A small panel attributed to Justus of Ghent seems of minor interest.
The donation also includes two small charming coppers by Jacob Grimmer, Spring and Summer, as well as two landscapes, painted on the same support and attributed to the circle of Jan “Velvet” Breughel, also of excellent quality. We hope that the attributions will be acknowledged once they have been examined. The only mediocre painting in the collection is a Portrait of a Lady by a “follower of Anton Van Dyck”, more likely a copy.
A Dutch landscape is considered from Meindert Hobbema’s circle.

The two Italian paintings differ in quality. Saint John the Baptist’s Childhood is a very beautiful and very important element of a predella by the Siennese artist Sano di Pietro (ill. 1). A Bust Portrait of a Man, a bit flat perhaps due to an old restoration, is attributed to Tintoretto himself ; the museum already holds a Deposition from the Cross by him.
