Sophie Join-Lambert Appointed Head of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours

24/12/11 - Appointment - Tours, Musée des Beaux-Arts - As the city of Tours did not wish to reconsider the question of a raise for Philippe Le Leyzour, recently appointed Conservateur général du Patrimoine, he will no longer remain as director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in this city and will finish his career at the French Ministry of Culture in Paris (he is supposed to retire in about a year).

Therefore, one of his collaborators, Sophie Join-Lambert will take over as head of this establishment as of 1st January 2012.
After graduating with a degree in sociology and also art history from the Université François-Rabelais in Tours, she defended her doctoral dissertation in 1989. She has spent her entire career at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours having first started as a curator in 1987 before becoming chief curator in 2008.
A specialist in 18th century French painting, Sophie Join-Lambert was notably curator of the exhibition Les peintres du Roi in 2000, both in Tours and Toulouse, as well as curating, alongside Dominique Jacquot in 2003, L’Apothéose du geste which we reviewed (see article in French). She wrote the catalogue raisonné for the 18th century paintings held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours and at the château of Azay-le-Ferron, which we discussed here (see article) ; at the moment, she is preparing, in collaboration with Anne Leclair and Jean-François Méjanès, the catalogue raisonné for Joseph-Benoît Suvée who will be highlighted in a retrospective in 2015 [1].

Apart from her field of specialization, she also co-curated, with Maxime Préaud in 2004, the exhibition on Abraham Bosse, savant graveur (see article in French) and worked on Delacroix by organizing an exhibition Delacroix en Touraine in 1998 as well as editing, with Laure Beaumont-Maillet and Barthélémy Jobert, Les Souvenirs d’un voyage au Maroc (Gallimard, collection Arts et artistes, 1999).
