8/12/08 — Theft—Odessa (Ukraine), Museum of Art The Arrest of Christ (ill.), an old copy of the Caravaggio painting stolen in Odessa in July of this same year has been recovered by the Ukrainian police.
We recalled in a recent news item (3/8/08) that the work, according to all of the most authoritative specialists, was not painted by Caravaggio, as the original composition is held at the National Gallery in Ireland. Obviously, the information has been communicated by the press (notably English, Spanish and Italian) without questioning, once again, the authenticity of the attribution. Their persistence in perpetuating the error, easy enough to verify, (but which would make the headline much less important and sensational) is rather fascinating and says much about the reliability of the media when it comes to a specialized field.
